How To Start A Career In Transportation

There’s no question that the transportation industry is currently undergoing immense change. With shifts in consumer habits, online retail, and same-day delivery, we’re seeing an increased demand for goods and services. The introduction of new technology, markets, client expectations and business models, all bring forth opportunities that are new to the industry – including career opportunities.

“Where do I start?” That’s an obvious question when you’re considering a career in transportation. Should you get a certification? Should you just apply? You’ll hear a seemingly endless variety of answers, because the transportation field is so vast, with numerous career paths ranging from truck driver to supply chain manager.

If you’re interested in being a part of this ever-growing industry, here are a few tips and tricks for you to jump-start your career.

Why choose a career in transportation

There will always be a need to supply and deliver goods across the world. The transportation industry is one that can’t be replaced by technology, though it can and is being enriched by it — all goods must be produced and transported. Without the planning and distribution of resources, many sectors including healthcare, retail, food, and even finance would be affected within 24 hours.

Individuals looking for an opportunity to make a positive impact in their line of work while growing and developing their skills will find transportation enticing. Those in the industry often work behind the scenes to plan, coordinate, and execute a delivery, and their impact is continuously felt throughout the supply chain. With the increasing globalization of the world, distribution challenges are ample, offering room for innovative thinking and change.

What you’ll need to start

Hard work and commitment are key values to help you start your career and quickly work your way up. Though there is an increasing need for applicants with formal education, we know not everyone learns this way. Intangible assets that an employee brings to the table are always valued, and sometimes at a higher degree then education.

Here are a few intangible skills to keep in mind:

1. An inquisitive nature.

2. An analytic mind to properly examine trends existing in the industry and day to day empirical transactions.

3. Problem-solving abilities.

4. Negotiation skills.

5. A strong client service-relationship oriented demeanor.

How to get started

Getting your foot through the door for an entry-level position is becoming increasingly difficult for young professionals looking to begin their careers. Employers may ask for higher levels of education and/or up 3 years of experience. Although it may seem like the deck is stacked against you, there are a few key things you can do to increase the appeal of your profile

1. Tailor your resume to requirements of the position you’re applying for.

2. When writing a cover letter make sure you highlight the intangible skills outlined in the section – what you’ll need to start. Deliberate your enthusiasm for what’s outlined in the job posting while expressing an understanding of the company’s value system and business requirements.

3. Create a relationship. LinkedIn is a great source to learn about a company’s values and mission. Furthermore, the platform enables you to create valuable relationships with HR representatives, while expressing your interest in a position.

4. Look for an internship and earn while you learn. Experience within the logistics industry brings tremendous value to your profile when you are starting out.

When to apply

There is no time like the present! Apply from home or better yet make an in-person appearance to drop off your resume. 30 seconds of face time can make all the difference when applying for a position as it demonstrates the go-getter nature found in your candidacy.
